Melbourne racing driver Dylan Young has continued his winning form, taking another win in the second round of the MRF Challenge Formula 3 season at the Bahrain F1 Circuit last weekend from December 12-14.
Young won Race 4 of the weekend, clinching the win ahead of Manaf Hijjawi and David Schumacher, son of former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher and nephew of Michael Schumacher.
Dylan nearly walked away from the weekend with two wins after finishing 3rd with another podium in Race 2 under the lights, having led up until the final lap.
He has now climbed from 3rd to 2nd place in the Drivers Championship, just 16 points shy of Championship leader Michelangelo Amendola heading into the final six races in India in February.
Young capped off his strong weekend with a 4th place in Race 1 and 5th place in Race 3 and he is now the most in form driver chasing the title after his Championship rivals had a difficult weekend.
Dylan's win was set up by a strong start which saw him take the lead on Turn 4 and he then led and controlled the entire race as he was never majorly threatened from behind.
It was Race 2 under the lights that really put on a show for the crowd as Dylan, David Schumacher and FIA Formula 3 driver Bent Viscaal had a hectic fight for the lead on the last two laps. Young had taken the lead on the opening lap of the race and lead the race until the final lap. After comfortably controlling the race, Young suffered two major lock ups which brought Viscaal and Schumacher close on the final laps. Viscaal lunged at Young for the lead on lap 9 but was unable to get past the Australian. However, the pair touched and Young sustained front wing damage which meant he lost front grip and struggled massively on the last lap. All three drivers went wheel to wheel in an amazing final lap but Young's damage meant Schumacher just found a way past before Viscaal and Young had a drag race to the chequered flag with Viscaal coming home in 2nd only half a car length ahead of Dylan in 3rd place.
Whilst Dylan was visibly disappointed to have the win taken from him on the final lap, he showed his maturity and tenacity to bounce back the next day and claim a fine victory.
The MRF Challenge heads to the MMRT Circuit for the final 6 races of the Championship from February 12-14 and Young is inviting corporate sponsors to help support his bid to clinch the title.
Quotes from Dylan:
"I'm so pumped to have had such a strong weekend, keeping the momentum of Dubai's win alive with another victory in Bahrain. This win meant so much to me as it was against some really strong competitors in front of the FIA World Endurance Championship teams which is definitely a goal of mine for the future. I must admit I was really disappointed having lost the win the day before, despite it being one of the most fun final few laps ever. But I was absolutely determined to not let anything stop me from getting the win in the final race and so I just put my head down and my team gave me a great car on rails to get the job done."
"As always, I want to thank my partners and backers for believing in me and my team and MRF crew for working so hard."
"I'll be doing everything I can to fight for the title at the final round in February but I need all the support I can get and we would love to have some more backers come onboard my campaign to help boost my ride and also set up an amazing 2020."
